You’ve learned to be sceptical of miracle cures and celebrity health advice, but what happens when misinformation disguises itself as legitimate science? When claims are backed by “published studies” and endorsed by people with “Dr.” before their names? This is where health misinformation becomes truly sophisticated and dangerous. Understanding how good science goes bad, through cherry-picking favourable results, misrepresenting methodology, exploiting statistical tricks, and manufacturing fake controversies, is essential for navigating health information in an age where “studies show” has become the most abused phrase in wellness marketing.

Section 1: How Good Studies Go Bad
Legitimate scientific research can be twisted, misrepresented, and weaponised to support false health claims through several systematic manipulation techniques.
Cherry-Picking Favourable Results While Ignoring Contrary Evidence
The scientific literature on most health topics contains hundreds or thousands of studies with varied findings. Cherry-picking means selectively citing only studies that support your predetermined conclusion while ignoring the broader body of evidence.
For example, someone promoting sugar as harmless could cite several studies showing no link between sugar and obesity—studies often funded by the sugar industry and focused on short-term outcomes. They’d ignore dozens of higher-quality studies showing clear associations between excessive sugar consumption and obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
This technique exploits most people’s inability to evaluate the full scientific literature. When someone cites “a study” supporting their claim, it sounds authoritative and scientific. Most people won’t investigate whether that single study represents scientific consensus or is an outlier contradicted by stronger evidence.
Supplement companies master this technique. They’ll reference one small preliminary study showing that their ingredient had positive effects in rats or test tubes, while ignoring multiple human studies showing no benefits. “Research shows” becomes technically true but fundamentally misleading.
Misrepresenting Studies in Health Claims
Even more common than cherry-picking is fundamentally misrepresenting what studies actually found. This happens through several mechanisms:
Correlation presented as causation:

A pilot study with 20 participants suggests possible benefits. Marketing materials claim “proven effective,” ignoring that small preliminary studies require replication in larger populations before drawing conclusions.
Sample Size and Methodology Gaming
Studies can be designed to produce desired results through questionable methodological choices like inadequate sample sizes, short study durations, flexible data analysis and correlation verses causation manipulation.
Inadequate sample sizes: Studies with very few participants have high random variation. By running multiple small studies, researchers can eventually get “positive” results by chance, then publish only those results while filing away negative findings.
Short study durations: A supplement might show temporary effects that disappear over time, but studies ending after a few weeks can claim positive results before the effects fade.
Flexible data analysis: Researchers can analyse data multiple ways until finding an analysis that shows statistical significance, then present that as if it were their planned approach, a practice called “p-hacking.”
Correlation vs. Causation Manipulation
The distinction between correlation (things happening together) and causation (one thing causing another) is fundamental to science, but it’s routinely exploited in health misinformation.
Observational studies can only show correlations—people who do X also tend to have Y. These studies are valuable for generating hypotheses but cannot prove causation because countless confounding factors might explain the association.
